**Pearl Facts:
I grade my pearls using an A-AAA grading scale, where AAA is the best quality available. AAA grade pearls will have a surface area that is at least 95% free of any defects (dimples, chips, "burn marks", or any unsightly thing).
Tahitian pearls are in a class by themselves. Rings and a couple of shallow dimples are common and natural. They are not considered flaws. Ringed Tahitian pearls - are called "Circlé ".
Tahitian pearls are grown in the warm salt waters of French Polynesia by the Pinctada margaritifera or black-lipped oyster. This oyster also is found in the Cook Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, New Caledonia, the Philippines, Panama, and the Gulf of Mexico.
Their color range is quite wide producing natural untreated colors ranging through various grays, to black, peacocks, and sometimes gold. A variety of overtones effect the body color producing what are termed pistachio, silver, champagne, gold, cherry, or lavender pearls. Deep chocolate colors seem to be the result of some sort of heat treatment, not dyes as are the rule with freshwater pearls.
Tahitian sizes generally range from 8mm to about 14.5mm in diameter. Length generally follows the width dimension within 2 to 2.5mm or so. Therefore a pearl listed as 8mm would normally be expected to measure 10mm x 8mm in length x width.
The Tahitian oyster, while quite large, seems a bit touchy. They are sensitive to any kind of pollution, changes in water temperature, and cannot be crowded.
I am told that only about 30% of the oysters that are cultivated actually produce a pearl - any pearl!
Round or near round shapes are a small percentage of the total harvest at any given time, with baroque shapes the most frequent occurrence.
Nothing glows quite like a Tahitian. They are quite individualistic. Exact matching is a near impossibility. Most often Tahitians are matched for near size, shape, color, and luster. Luster can range from almost mirror like to soft and silky.
Poor quality pearls - of any kind - are dull and chalky.
**Vermeil Facts:
The only plating I normally use with any regularity is Rhodium over .925 sterling silver or 14kt white gold.
VERMEIL is pronounced "vehr-MAY," and is solid .925 Sterling Silver which is plated with at least 10kt gold to a thickness of at lease 2.5 microns. These beadcaps are plated by electorlysis in 24kt gold to a thickness of 3 microns. I get them from one of my suppliers in Indonesia.
They are very durable and strong. 24kt gold is too soft to be useful for jewelry. Solid 22kt gold affords a beautiful rich color, but it is also very soft and not very durable. It is also quite expensive.
24kt over sterling silver offers a beautiful rich color while being very strong. The 3 micron thickness offers a durable surface. I am confidant that these will serve well for many years.
**Silver Facts:
Argentium® Silver, Continuum® Silver and Sterlium Plus® Silver Sterling Silver is designated .930
Sterling Silver is designated as .925.
Argentium® Silver, Continuum® Silver, Sterlium Plus® Silver and Sterling Silver are all nickel and lead free. The inclusion of nickel and lead is the main reason that plated items may irritate your skin. There is no nickel or lead in any of the items I make.
Argentium® Silver, Continuum® Silver, and Sterlium Plus® Silver are all names of a new alloy of sterling silver that contains Germanium (an element atomic #32). It produces an alloy that is resistant to tarnishing. Thus it is safer for your pearls and very easy to take care of.
These silvers are also stronger than sterling silver.
Titania should require very little care. Nevertheless, I will include a small anti-tarnish tab which should be kept with your bangle when you are not wearing it. The tab should last for 2 years. It will not harm your pearls. The tab does not prevent tarnish, but it will inhibit tarnish from forming. I will also include a pearl safe cleaning cloth with your order for your convenience.
