**PEARL FACTS:
I grade my pearls using an A-AAA grading scale, where AAA is the best quality available. AAA grade pearls will have a surface that is at least 95% free of any defects (dimples, chips, "burn marks", or any unsightly thing).
>PEARL TYPE:
Tahitian pearls are in a class by themselves. Rings and a couple of shallow dimples are common and natural. They are not considered flaws. Ringed Tahitian pearls - are called "Circlé ".
Tahitian pearls are grown in the warm salt waters of French Polynesia by the Pinctada margaritifera or black-lipped oyster. This oyster also is found in the Cook Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, New Caledonia, the Philippines, Panama, and the Gulf of Mexico.
Their color range is quite wide producing natural untreated colors ranging through various grays, to black, peacocks, and sometimes gold. A variety of overtones effect the body color producing what are termed pistachio, silver, champagne, gold, cherry, or lavender pearls. Deep chocolate colors seem to be the result of some sort of heat treatment, not dyes as are the rule with freshwater pearls.
Tahitian sizes generally range from 8mm to about 14.5mm in diameter. Length generally follows the width dimension within 2 to 2.5mm or so. Therefore a pearl listed as 8mm would normally be expected to measure 10mm x 8mm in length x width.
The Tahitian oyster, while quite large, seems a bit touchy. They are sensitive to any kind of pollution, changes in water temperature, and cannot be crowded.
I am told that only about 30% of the oysters that are cultivated actually produce a pearl - any pearl!
Round or near round shapes are a small percentage of the total harvest at any given time, with baroque shapes the most frequent occurrence.
Nothing glows quite like a Tahitian. They are quite individualistic. Exact matching is a near impossibility. Most often Tahitians are matched for near size, shape, color, and luster. Luster can range from almost mirror like to soft and silky.
Poor quality pearls - of any kind - are dull and chalky.
Silver Stats:
**Silver Facts:
Sterling Silver is designated as .925.
Sterling Silver does not contain nickel or lead which is the main reason that silver plated items may irritate your skin.
Sterling silver will tarnish over time to a deep blue black. The tarnish may stain your pearl. Neither I, nor my testers have noticed any problems with the sterling silver settings in the few years that we have been observing this issue. It may be that problems occur over very long periods of time and a great deal of neglect. It is not clear if the tarnish would actually pit the pearl. I have never observed this with silver, only with copper.
**Rhodium Facts:
Rhodium is a member of the platinum precious metals group. White gold and sterling silver may be plated to improve the color of the metal and to avoid tarnishing. (Yes, white gold will darken over time, but does not tarnish as sterling silver will.)
Rhodium is quite durable and is hypoallergenic. It will not harm your pearls. Rhodium by itself is a good deal more expensive than platinum or gold. But used as a plating material on Sterling Silver, it is affordable, durable, and adds value to the silver.
Mai should require very little care. Nevertheless, I will include a small anti-tarnish tab and a small desiccant packet which should be kept with your ring when you are not wearing it. The tab should last for 2 years and will not harm your pearl. These do not prevent tarnish, but will inhibit tarnish from forming. I will also include a pearl safe cleaning cloth with your order for your convenience.

**Mai would make a great ring for any occasion - promise ring, engagement ring, wedding ring, statement ring, or gift for an anniversary or June birthday. I have shown her both with and without a wedding band just to give you an idea about options. None of the wedding bands shown in the photos are included in this listing. If you would like a wedding band, let me know and I will get a quote for you. This setting is a simple but contemporary style that compliments the pearl very well.
Enjoy!
