NOTES:
LAPIS LAZULI derives from a deep blue metamorphic rock used as a semi-precious stone that has been prized since antiquity for its intense color. Lapis Lazuli has been been mined for more than 6,000 years.

Mohs hardness:  5-5.5
Refractive Index: 1.5

Ancient civilizations believed that the veins of glittering pyrite found in the lapis were actual gold, driving up its value. The stone's expense today, as in the ancient world, results from its hardness, which makes extraction somewhat difficult. There is evidence of Lapis being used in the Middle East and in Egypt  as early as c. 4900–4000 BCE.
Mined in the mountains of South America, Afghanistan, and Russia, this gem-quality semi-precious stone has been used in European painting since at least 1400. It is an opulent blue hue known as Ultra Marine in pigment. Its concentrated blue is a classic  that is extremely rich and light reflective due to the irregular and angular shape of the pigment particles. The result, for painters, is an elegant blue that is completely different from the predictable blue of synthetic ultramarine pigments.

Fun fact: Powdered lapis was used as eye shadow by Cleopatra!

**Rhodium Plated Sterling Silver Facts:
Sterling Silver is designated as . 925. Sterling Silver is a precious metal that will tarnish to a deep blue black if exposed to the air or sulfur compounds. I often plate my sterling silver with Rhodium to help retard this color change.

Rhodium is a member of the Platinum precious metals group. Rhodium by itself is a good deal more expensive than Platinum or Gold. But used as a plating material on Sterling Silver or White Gold, it is affordable, durable, and adds value to the metal that it is used over. It improves the color of the metal and avoids or retards tarnishing. (Yes, white gold will darken over time, but does not tarnish as sterling silver will.)

Rhodium produces a corrosion-resistant, tarnish-resistant and extremely durable finish. Additionally, Rhodium is hypoallergenic.
