**Peridot Facts:
Peridot, a variety of Olivine, has been known for many centuries. It was mined from an island to the east of Egypt during the reign of Cleopatra VII  and before. It was dubbed  "evening emerald" by the ancient Romans because of the way the color glows even in dim light.

An interesting fact about the color of Peridot is that it is not caused by trace impurities, but is a result of its composition. This means that Peridot is only ever found in green. Fine quality stones are transparent, with a vitreous surface, no to few inclusions, and with a clear clean color. The most desirable colors are in the olive green to apple green range. Brownish colors are considered lower grade.

Peridot has a Mohs rating of 6.5-7; durable for use in jewelry. Refractive index is 1.65 to 1.70 which means that it has good fire.  Thus the designation- "Evening Emerald"- due to its retaining its vivid color under varied lighting conditions.

Peridot needs a slight bit of care. Like many gemstones it cannot stand intense heat or rapid temperature changes. Peridot can also chip if banged hard, and should never be steam cleaned or cleaned with ultrasonic cleaners.

Peridot is the birthstone for August and the 15th anniversary gemstone.

**Fun Facts:
Peridot is called "Tears of Pele" in Hawaii.
Silver is called "Tears of the Moon" in many parts of the world, while yellow gold is called, "Tears of the Sun".
Peridot has been found in meteorites and the dust of comets, although the crystals have been too small to be useful.

**Silver Facts:
The newer tarnish resistant silvers: Argentium® Silver,  Continuum® Silver and  Sterlium Plus® Silver are designated ".930".  Sterling silver is designated ".925".

Even though  Argentium® Silver, Continuum® Silver, or Sterlium Plus® Silver almost never needs much care, I always send along an anti-tarnish tab and a polishing cloth with your order. The tab should be kept with your ring when it is being stored. It will not prevent tarnish but will inhibit it from forming, and will not harm your ring.

Sterling Silver, Argentium® Silver, Continuum® Silver, and Sterlium Plus® Silver are all nickel free and lead free and will not irritate you skin.
